Be careful what you post this year

Recently US comedian and actor Kevin Hart was haunted by twitter posts from 8 to 10 years ago and as a result, had to step down from presenting the 2019 Oscars. I am guessing that opportunities like hosting the Oscars don’t come much bigger and probably won’t come knocking again any time soon.

Anyway it got me thinking. Why weren’t these alleged (I haven’t seen them myself) homophobic posts picked up on at the time? When you think about it the answer is simple – things of course have moved on. Ten years ago these unfortunate tweets were more acceptable then and some found them “funny”. Social media has the ability to amplify collective perceptions and in doing, link everyone together in a collective voice. Very powerful and very quick.

So, the moral of this is of course don’t post anything stupid! However, what is not stupid today could well be in 10 years’ time. “Stupid is, as stupid does”. So when you next post a tweet, ask yourself, what will this look like in 10 years time?

Be careful what you post this year
